Lighting Designer for Legally Blonde the Musical Jr. 

Performs at the Yellow Box Theatre at 1635 Emerson Lane Naperville, IL

DESIGNER MUST BE AVAILABLE:

Designer meetings TBD at our rehearsal space at 1989 University Lane, Unit D in Lisle.
Tech Week : Load in on Sunday Feb. 15th from 1pm-9pm.
Monday the 16th, Tuesday 17th and Thursday 19th  from 4pm-9pm.
Show opens on Feb. 20.  Strike is on Feb. 28th immediately after the show – around 6 pm.
Designer is not responsible for running the console during shows.

Lighting designer should be able to be in the space during the day on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday for programming.  Designer may be able to be in the space a little earlier on load in day, but not guaranteed. Designer must be familiar with hooking up both power and dmx.

Duties include designing and programming lights for the show.  Yellow Box has a plot hung that cannot be changed, additional lights may be added: they would need to be LED fixtures as there are no open dimmers.

Designer would be responsible for

*Arranging additional fixtures if budget allows, meeting the rental vendor to help unload fixtures on the Friday before load in, hanging, cabling and focusing additional fixtures.

*Be at strike to take down additional fixtures, and meet the vendor’s truck on Monday after strike to help load.

A lighting console will need to be rented unless the designer is familiar with Jands Vista consoles.

BrightSide Theatre is seeking a Technical Director/Set Construction.

The Technical Director is responsible for working with production’s Scenic Designer and Director to bring the vision of the set to completion.  Set build takes place in our Rehearsal Studio at 1989 University Lane Unit D, Lisle, IL  while the performances venues are in Naperville (North Central College & The Yellow Box Theatre).

This position reports directly to the Artistic Director and Executive Director to manage artistic expectations and budgetary requirements accordingly.

This is a per show stipend position.

‍Responsibilities include:

  • Oversees the completion of scenic elements for 3 mainstage and 2 theatre for young audience productions per year within the scope of the artistic vision, within budget, meeting scheduled deadlines and in accordance with industry standard safety practices.
  • Attends design, production and departmental meetings, staff runs, technical rehearsals and opening night.  Build times are open around scheduled rehearsals as both take place in the Rehearsal Studio in Lisle.  Tech week, the TD must be available until the set is fully loaded in (on the weekends and during the daytime).
  • Works with Executive Director to secure over hire help.
  • Manages shop supplies and equipment, tools and facilities, as well as any necessary or recommended upgrades, including repairs and maintenance or replacement. Repurpose or reuse stock items.
  • Creates projected budgets for each show based on design; reviews designs for logistical, safety and budgetary feasibility and provides avenues for adjustments or reductions for budget and time constraints.
  • Tracks all elements of the scenic budget and submits invoices, receipts and expense reports in a timely fashion.
  • Interface with other design departments, artistic staff, stage management or actors to collaborate or advise on design or functionality of scenic elements.
  • Promptly responds to production notes given in rehearsal and performance reports.

‍Preferred experience

  • 5+ years in theatrical shop work or other commensurate experience to build a set safely.
  • Knowledge of best practices of theatrical building, including but not limited to scenic carpentry and fabrication, rigging, and automation.
  • Experience in managing budgets & timelines.
  • Competent computer skills including knowledge of AutoCad, Vectorworks, Sketchup or other relevant design software.
  • Working knowledge of machinery and tools commonly used in theatrical construction.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and able to work collaboratively with all staff to reach the desired result.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
